Shalva began in a small apartment with just six children, founded by Malki and Kalman Samuels, who believed no family should face the challenges of disability alone. With love and determination, they built a haven where children could grow, learn, and thrive.

What started as a modest initiative has since become a global model of inclusion. Today, Shalva supports thousands of individuals with disabilities each week -transforming lives, building community, and standing as a beacon of hope and possibility for families across Israel and beyond.

  • Summer Camp for Everyone

The first Shalva summer camp was created to give children with disabilities joyful experiences while offering vital respite for their families. It quickly became a highlight of the year.

Today, every summer, Camp Shalva welcomes hundreds of children with disabilities and dedicated peer volunteers. From water sports to music, each day is packed with fun, growth, and inclusion.

Even during wartime, the camp never closes. This past summer featured both day and sleepaway sessions – providing laughter, therapy, friendships, and unforgettable memories for all who attended.

A pivotal milestone in Shalva’s journey was receiving official approval to recruit National Service volunteers. What began as a recognition of Shalva’s contribution to Israeli society has become one of our greatest strengths. Today, these dedicated young men and women are not only an essential part of our workforce – they are the heart and soul of Shalva. Their energy, compassion, and unwavering commitment infuse every program with warmth and purpose, embodying the spirit of service and shaping the future of inclusion in Israel.

  • Shalva Bet Nachshon Opens
  • Facility Expansion

Shalva’s growing impact led to the expansion of its original villa in Har Nof into a multi-floor center, complete with a hydrotherapy pool and therapy spaces tailored to each child’s needs.

Named Bet Nachshon, the center honors IDF soldier Nachshon Waxman OBM, whose younger brother was part of the Shalva family. Nachshon was a beloved visitor who brought joy to everyone he met.

This building stood as a living tribute – built on strength, love, and a shared commitment to giving every child the chance to flourish.

Shalva’s official recognition by Israel’s Ministry of Social Services was a defining moment. With government support, Shalva could expand its reach far beyond word-of-mouth – bringing transformative care to families across the country.

This partnership enabled the growth of therapies, education, and holistic programs tailored to every stage of life. It also positioned Shalva as a national leader in disability support.
Today, that recognition continues to strengthen our mission, ensuring no family is left behind and every child has the opportunity to thrive.

  • First Joint Down Syndrome Conference

In partnership with Hadassah Medical Center, Shalva launched Israel’s first joint national conference on Down syndrome – creating a platform for innovation, collaboration, and awareness.

Held annually to mark International Down Syndrome Day, the event brings together hundreds of medical experts, educators, researchers, and families to share knowledge and shape inclusive policy.

Hadassah offers world-class expertise, while Shalva coordinates and hosts the gathering, reflecting our leadership in disability advocacy. This powerful collaboration advances care, supports families, and pushes forward a more inclusive future for all.

  • HOPE from Day One
  • Program Establishment

Shalva’s Me and My Mommy program revolutionized early intervention in Israel. Referred just after birth, families receive intensive therapies for their babies with disabilities, along with emotional and practical support for parents.

To date, over 1,600 babies have taken part, with 200 new families joining annually. Mothers gain strength, skills, and a community that walks alongside them.

Recognized nationally as Israel’s most effective early intervention program, its impact now extends globally – serving as a model for institutions developing their own family-focused programs of support.

  • Daycare Opens for Toddlers with Disabilities

Shalva’s Rehabilitative Daycare offers toddlers ages 1–3 a nurturing, inclusive space designed to help them flourish. Educators, therapists, and social workers work closely to support each child’s physical, emotional, and developmental growth.

The program also uplifts families, providing workshops, support groups, and a vital sense of community.

By combining expert care with genuine compassion, the daycare builds a strong foundation for lifelong learning and independence. It empowers both children and their families, ensuring that every small step forward is met with support and celebration.

Founded by renowned psychologist Prof. Malka Margalit, Shalva’s International Academic Research Committee drives innovation in disability care.

Prof. Margalit, a global leader in rehabilitation psychology, brings decades of experience, research, and policy influence to this pioneering initiative. Under her leadership, the committee includes experts from top universities and hospitals worldwide.

  • Music That Changes Lives

The Shalva Band began in a music therapy room – and grew into a global phenomenon. Despite initial hesitation from mainstream stages, their raw talent and message of inclusion opened doors around the world.

From school tours to Google headquarters, they’ve performed globally and even reached the finals of Kochav Haba, Israel’s version of America’s Got Talent. Though they stepped back due to Shabbat observance, their impact soared. Today, the band continues to inspire with every note – proving that music can challenge perceptions and celebrate human potential.

  • Jerusalem Municipality Grants Shalva Land
  • Facility Expansion

In a pivotal moment for disability care in Israel, the Jerusalem Municipality granted Shalva a prime plot at the city’s entrance to build the Shalva National Center.

This gift marked the beginning of an ambitious vision: to create the world’s most advanced center for inclusion and support. At the groundbreaking ceremony, families, leaders, and supporters gathered to celebrate this historic leap.

More than a construction project, this was the foundation for a future where lives would be transformed, and inclusion would become the national – and international – standard.

  • Yossi Visits the White House

Yossi Samuels, the young man who inspired the founding of Shalva, visited the White House and met with President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.

Rendered blind and deaf by a medical injury, Yossi overcame immense challenges to become a global voice for inclusion. His remarkable journey from silence to advocacy embodies hope and determination.

The visit spotlighted Shalva’s work and brought international recognition to disability rights. Yossi’s story continues to motivate change-makers around the world, reminding us that with the right support, anything is possible.

Shalva earned ISO certification, an international seal of excellence that reflects its commitment to the highest standards in service, care, and organizational management.

Team Shalva made its debut in the Jerusalem Marathon, launching a tradition of purpose-driven sport. What began with a few passionate runners has grown into an international movement, with hundreds  from around the world participating each year.

In partnership with the Jerusalem Municipality, Shalva introduced Israel’s first Community Race – an accessible 800-meter course where children, families, and people of all abilities run side by side.

More than a marathon, it’s a celebration of dignity, unity, and hope – powered by Shalva’s mission and the unstoppable spirit of its champions.

Standing at the entrance of the Shalva National Center is a sculpture by acclaimed Israeli artist Menashe Kadishman. Known for his emotive symbolism, Kadishman created this piece to reflect Shalva’s values: unity, dignity, and hope.

The monument greets every visitor with a powerful visual reminder that inclusion is not just a value, but a commitment.

More than art, it’s a daily message—that every person matters, every story deserves to be told, and every life has meaning. Kadishman’s legacy now lives on at Shalva.

Through a unique partnership with Hapoel Jerusalem and Beitar Jerusalem, Shalva launched inclusive basketball and soccer teams where athletes with and without disabilities train and compete together.
Shalva’s players gain motor skills, confidence, and community through coaching from Hapoel and Beitar professionals, weekly practices, and games against mainstream teams.

Our presence at Hapoel and Beitar games challenges stereotypes and inspires fans with a powerful message: sports can unite us all.

These teams go beyond the court, proving that passion and teamwork create better athletes and a stronger, more inclusive society.

  • President Shimon Peres OBM Visits Shalva

We were honored to host President Shimon Peres OBM, who met with our children, families, and staff, sharing warmth, encouragement, and admiration.

A champion of social equality and inclusion, President Peres’ visit highlighted the importance of building a society where every individual is valued.

His words and presence were meaningful, leaving a lasting impression on the entire Shalva community, and his legacy continues to inspire us in our ongoing work to create a better, kinder world.

Following his visit, he said –
“All those who criticize Israel should come to Shalva and witness the other side of Israel. The most noble, loving, and caring Israel. I am proud to be part of this Israel.”

  • Our Own Street in Jerusalem

When the Jerusalem Municipality named the street leading to the Shalva National Center “Shalva Road,” it became more than a location—it became a symbol.
This act recognized Shalva’s profound influence on the city and its culture of inclusion. Every car that turns onto Shalva Road heads toward a place where possibilities are reimagined and lives are transformed.
A literal and figurative path, Shalva Road honors a movement built on compassion, resilience, and community. It’s where the journey to a more inclusive society begins.

  • Kilimanjaro for Shalva

In 2015, a diverse team from around the world set out to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in support of Shalva.

The climb quickly became a powerful metaphor for overcoming obstacles, proving that no mountain is too high when driven by purpose. More than a fundraiser, it forges unbreakable bonds and inspires a series of other challenges.

With six successful summits and more to come, the Kilimanjaro journey embodies Shalva’s mission: empowering individuals to reach new heights and redefining what’s possible through determination, inclusion, and teamwork.

  • School Year Opens at the Shalva National Center

The 2016 school year opened a bold new chapter at the Shalva National Center, with kindergartens and daycares officially launching in a festive ribbon-cutting led by then Mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat.

For the first time, hundreds of young children with disabilities began their educational journey in a purpose-built environment of love and possibility.

Each September since has marked not just another year, but another step toward brighter futures. These moments remind us that when children are embraced early, their potential knows no bounds.

  • Israel's Judoka Donates Olympic Jacket
  • Program Expansion

Israeli Olympic medalist Ori Sasson instantly connected with Shalva’s children . And he chose to donate his Olympic team jacket that was auctioned to support Shalva’s  programs. He went a step further by launching our Judo program.

Designed and led by Sasson, the Judo program builds strength, balance, and confidence in participants. Its success shone in 2018 when Shalva’s yellow-belt judo trainees opened the European Judo Championship.

Through his ongoing partnership, Sasson proves that champions are not only defined by medals, but by the impact they make.

The grand opening of the Shalva National Center was a dream realized. Supporters from around the world gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate years of vision, dedication, and community.

The day featured the opening of Shalva’s Park for Inclusion in Memory of Roland Arnal and the Gordon and Leslie Diamond Family Center – both designed to foster joy, accessibility, and togetherness.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked not just the unveiling of a building, but the launch of a beacon of hope.

This center is a sanctuary of progress, inclusion, and boundless love.

  • Because Children in Wheelchairs Are Children

The Shalva Park for Inclusion, located at the heart of Jerusalem, is the city’s first fully inclusive and accessible public playground. Built in partnership with the Jerusalem Municipality and dedicated in memory of Ambassador Roland E. Arnall, the park welcomes hundreds of children daily, with and without disabilities, to play, laugh, and grow side by side.

It’s more than just a playground; it’s a vibrant space where inclusion comes to life, where every child is free to simply be a child, and where families from all walks of life come together as one community.

  • Cafe Shalva Opens

Café Shalva began as a space of employment, dignity, and inclusion. Today, it’s a lively boutique café where individuals with disabilities work as valued team members in hospitality and service.

Beyond the café, Shalva’s vocational training programs empower hundreds of individuals with disabilities through meaningful employment across departments and in our gift shop. From handcrafted ceramics and jewelry to packaging and logistics, each role builds confidence, develops skills, and promotes independence, proving that inclusive employment transforms lives and strengthens communities.

  • National Crisis Center for People with Disabilities
  • Program Expansion

In colaboration with Israel’s Homefront Command, Shalva is recognized as Israel’s National Crisis Response Center for People with Disabilities, offering safety and care in times of emergency.
In partnership with government agencies, Shalva can provide full-board shelter and continuing therapy regiments for up to 1,200 people, including evacuees with disabilities.

Since October 7, Shalva has welcomed thousands, offering more than refuge -offering hope. In moments of national crisis, Shalva ensures that no one is forgotten, standing as a sanctuary of compassion and unwavering support for those who need it most.

  • First Independent Living in the Community Apartment

In a transformative step toward independence, Shalva opened its first Independent Living in the Community apartment in 2018.

Now home to around 100 residents across 25 apartments, this initiative is expanding to meet growing demand.

Designed to empower young adults with disabilities, these apartments foster personal growth, friendships, and a true sense of independence.

Each apartment is a vibrant home where residents live with dignity and joy – proving that with the right support, independence is not only possible – it’s powerful.

  • Oral Health for Everyone (OHEV)

Dental care is often out of reach for people with disabilities, who face higher risks and fewer resources. That’s why Shalva launched OHEV: Oral Health for Everyone.

Through the Henry Schein Cares Dental Clinic, Shalva delivers expert dental care, hygiene education, and personalized wellness plans -transforming smiles and lives. OHEV also supports clinical research to further the field.

With this groundbreaking program, Shalva is not only treating patients but rewriting the narrative, proving that every child deserves access to quality, compassionate oral health.

  • Shalva Band Performs at Eurovision

The Shalva Band captivated the world at Eurovision 2019, delivering a performance seen by nearly 200 million viewers. Their message: inclusion, talent, and hope.

After reaching the finals on Israel’s Rising Star competition, they gracefully stepped down due to Shabbat observance – earning admiration worldwide.

Their Eurovision debut wasn’t just music – it was a movement. With every note, they broke barriers, touched hearts, and redefined what it means to take center stage.

The Shalva Band’s voice continues to echo across the globe with power and pride.

In his memoir Dreams Never Dreamed, Shalva founder Kalman Samuels shares a deeply personal journey from heartbreak to hope.

The book traces the origins of Shalva and the Samuels family’s resilience in the face of adversity. It’s a story of grit, vision, and the unwavering belief that one person can change the world.

Samuels’ journey has inspired a movement that continues to transform lives. Dreams Never Dreamed is not only a memoir- it’s a call to dream bigger and build a better, more inclusive world.

  • Shalva Center Welcomes 150,000 Visitors Annually

Shalva reached a remarkable milestone with 150,000 annual visitors to the Center – a vibrant hub in Jerusalem that has become one of Israel’s premier venues for conferences, performances, and community gatherings.

While not all visitors come for Shalva’s programs, every guest steps into our world – experiencing inclusion not as an abstract concept, but as a lived reality. This is reverse inclusion in action: instead of integrating individuals with disabilities into the broader community, the broader community enters Shalva’s inclusive environment.

Each event offers a window into what’s possible when dignity, accessibility, and excellence come together – reshaping perceptions and planting the seeds of change far beyond our walls.

  • Kalman Samuels Lights the Torch of Independence

In a moment of national honor, Kalman Samuels, Founder and President of Shalva, was selected to light one of the 12 torches at Israel’s 74th Independence Day Ceremony on Mount Herzl.

This prestigious recognition is reserved for those who have profoundly impacted Israeli society, and Samuels’ decades-long devotion to children and adults with disabilities made him a beacon of compassion, leadership, and enduring hope.

As the torch was lit, so too was a symbol of a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

  • Team Shalva in the NY Marathon

Team Shalva Saucony took the New York City Marathon by storm, bringing together hundreds of runners from across Israel – reservists, soldiers, evacuees, doctors, students, and October 7th survivors – each running with heart and purpose.

They run for Israel, Shalva’s children. They run for unity, for healing, and for the strength of a nation that chooses life in the face of challenge.

With every mile, they raise spirits and awareness, proudly waving the Israeli flag and the banner of inclusion to the finish line.

Following the success of the NY Marathon, we now have teams in all major marathons around the world, including Tokyo, London, Berlin, and Sydney.

  • Shalva Shares Its Model with the World

The Shalva model has become a source of inspiration for organizations around the world seeking to create inclusive, impactful programs for individuals with disabilities.

Through the Shalva Institute, we have shared our knowledge and guided the development of initiatives across continents – from the first inclusive classroom in Mozambique to the Shemesh Center in Brazil and the Lev Center in Siberia, among many others. Each one is a testament to the belief that inclusion can, and should, happen everywhere, and that every person, no matter where they live, deserves access to opportunity, dignity, and hope.

  • 10th Snoezelen Course

The Shalva Institute offers professional courses for disability specialists, medical students, and first responders, equipping them with tools to support individuals with disabilities. Among its flagship programs are Snoezelen Therapy courses, which have empowered professionals across Israel with advanced, sensory-based techniques to promote calm, connection, and healing.

With the completion of our 10th course, we celebrate a decade of training, excellence, and innovation.

The Shalva Institute now shares its expertise globally through online workshops and partnerships with care centers worldwide, ensuring that more professionals can bring comfort, calm, and connection to those who need it most.

This milestone is a testament to Shalva’s enduring commitment to knowledge, healing, and global impact.

  • Living Through War Art Exhibition

In response to the October 7th war, Shalva opened its doors to individuals with disabilities evacuated from conflict zones, integrating them into its therapeutic programs. Together with Shalva’s regular participants, they turned to art to process trauma, express emotion, and rediscover hope. The Living Through War exhibition showcases this powerful journey, where art becomes a tool for healing, unity, and resilience. The exhibition was shown around the world, and visitors stepped into the lived experiences of these artists. The exhibit challenges perspectives on war, disability, and strength, reminding us that creativity can build bridges even in the darkest of times.
